Jonas Gerigk is a double bass player and composer. After his bachelor studies at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria v. Weber Dresden and Norwegian Academie of Music Oslo he studied in the master course at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Sebastian Gramss and Prof. Dieter Manderscheid.
A main focus of his work deals with the term “Explorative Music”. He is doing intensive research on the expansion of the sound spectrum of the acoustic double bass. With a physical as well as technical approach he explores the limits of the natural acoustics of the double bass.
His solo album “Sound Plantings” (IMPAKT Records) is a snapshot of this work in the field of extended playing techniques.
With his quartet “Okoton” he combines unorthodox sounds with concrete melodies/harmonies and time-flow. Thus the project balances between convention and abstraction, aiming for the sound space of a jazz quartet with an extended depth of timbre.
He organized the radio shows “HEIMklang” (Dresden) and “SnapShot” (Cologne), in which free improvisations of changing groups were broadcast live in the studio. Between October 2020 and February 2021 he got the chance to organize the concert series “RAUMKLANG – Explorative Music” at the Atelier KunstRaum Dorissa Lem in Cologne.
He is an active member of the collective “IMPAKT – Improvisation und aktuelle Musik Köln” .
A brief overview of current projects
„It is a snapshot of sound explorations of my instrument. The limits of natural acoustics of the double bass, organic-abstract textures and associative free-flow were the content of three wonderful days of recording at Bergkirche Tharandt in July 2020. The best takes made it onto this little beauty and are free to the world as of today…“
Idea: Unorthodox sounds combined with concrete melodies, harmonies and time-flow. A compositional balance between convention and abstraction. A jazz quartet with contemporary background.
